About 8,000 people attended the Rally and March to save the Headwaters
Forest on Sept. 14. Speakers included former California Gov. Jerry
Brown, blues singer Bonnie Raitt, former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey
Hart, actor Woody Harrelson, and numerous other forestry activists.
The day featured music, speakers, and a peaceful march. Thousands helped to place protective sandbags around the home of Stafford, Calif. resident Michael O'Neal, which is endangered by impending mudslides from a slope damaged by Pacific Lumber's excessive logging.
Thousands gathered to show their support for protection of all 60,000 acres.
Bonnie Raitt's guitar and Mickey Hart's drums brought the crowd to their feet.
Activists of all ages showed their true colors in support of the ancient groves.
This
Stafford home fell victim to a January, 1997, mudslide. Clearcutting
causes unnatural soil exposure. leading to erosion. On steep slopes,
this can have a devastating impact.
