Northwest Forest Plan in the balance. Comments needed to extend its protections!

It's time to step up in defense of the forests of the Pacific Northwest.

Public comment is now open on the U.S. Forest Service's proposed makeover of one of the most-effective conservation plans for protecting mature and old-growth forests in recent history—the Northwest Forest Plan.

Unfortunately the Forest Service is proposing a slate of weakening changes to the 30-year-old framework.

Take action today to safeguard and strengthen this critical bulwark against the extinction and climate crises!

In 1994 the plan cast its aegis across some 24 million acres of the world's most lush, biodiverse and carbon-rich temperate rainforests. In parts or all of six California national forests and others in Oregon and Washington, watersheds that were heavily damaged by over a century of logging have since come a long way toward recovery.

The plan not only benefited popular and highly threatened species such as the northern spotted owl, but also has allowed significant, though reduced, timber extraction to continue.

But now at the onset of a new presidential administration hostile to conservation the Forest Service is kicking off a sweeping revision to the Plan. The agency's proposals would newly expose over 800,000 acres of mature forests to commercial logging, at the same time creating new loopholes in existing protections for wildlife and water.

Deadline to submit comments is Mar. 17.

Using discredited and outdated scientific arguments the agency seeks to justify more logging in the name of wildfire prevention.
