Comments needed now to prevent dirty biofuels industry from foothold in California

What may be the most forest-devastating project in California in generations has now been unveiled in a proposal for public review.

Your comments are urgently needed to stop this costly, destructive and highly polluting industrial boondoggle from getting a foothold here.

The controversial Forest Resiliency Demonstration Project would build two new forest-gobbling wood pellet factories in Northern California, one each in Lassen and Tuolumne counties, then ship the pellets overseas to be burned in power plants to generate electricity in Asia and Europe.

Project proponents: 1) claim it will produce "green" energy when it actually would be far dirtier than power produced burning coal, 2) maintain the project will reduce wildfire danger when it actually would make wildfire conditions worse, and 3) claim it would create good jobs when in fact this fiasco requires massive and ongoing government subsidies just to keep it afloat.

The draft Environmental Impact Report was released on Oct. 22, accompanied by a public comment period jammed into the center of the election and holiday season. With your help we have been able to extend the initial comment deadline by an additional month, to Jan. 20.

See the RESOURCES section at bottom of this alert for a deeper dive, including coverage of recent events at which Forests Forever and other groups spoke out.

This dirty biomass industry has already made itself an unwelcome neighbor throughout the U.S. South, where for years it has harmed the health and quality of life of local residents.

At present this industry does not exist on a large scale in California. Take action to help us keep it that way!
