Biomass incineration.

Is burning wood chips to generate electricity a clean form of "alternative" energy?

Surprisingly, no. This one has caused even some long-time forest-defense groups to look again at their long-held assumptions.

To generate one kilowatt requires burning a much greater volume of wood pieces than the volume of, say, coal needed to generate the same kilowatt. The net effect is that burning wood waste to produce a kilowatt emits more carbon pollution than coal!

While we don't by any means advocate turning back to fossil fuels for energy, burning trees for kilowatts is neither clean nor good for forest health.
