The time to end deforestation is now. And there's no better place to start than California's largest taxpayer-owned state forest, Jackson Forest in Mendocino County.
A diverse and vocal opposition to the logging has sharpened its criticisms of CalFIRE's timber program at Jackson in recent years but has thus far failed to deter the agency. CalFIRE brings in revenue from the timber sales but cites scientific fact-finding as its primary justification.
In the face of a wide array of environmental concerns and the demonstrated rarity and value of mature redwoods for the environment and recreation, the agency has nonetheless announced an array of logging plans to be conducted at Jackson in the coming years.
The time has come to save Jackson Forest.
